Elective Course Description
Students will rotate on the Colorectal Service, where they will contribute to and learn from the care of patients with cancers of the large bowel. They will scrub in to the operating room, attend outpatient clinic, and participate in daily rounds and conferences. Course objectives include: comprehension of the principles of diagnosis and curative surgical treatment of patients with neoplastic disease, understanding of evolving multidisciplinary treatment and principles for palliation of patients with cancer, and an exploration of the biology and natural history of neoplasia. Students who are so inclined will have an opportunity to undertake a clinical project.
Learning Objectives
Formulate the differential diagnosis and outline the diagnostic workup of patient with rectal bleeding.
Describe the diagnostic work-up and treatment options for patients with rectal cancer.
Explain the use of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with colon and rectal cancer.
