Arthur E. Brown MD, MACP, is an emeritus member of the Infectious Diseases and Allergy Service in the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). He is also Professor Emeritus of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.
After graduating from Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, Dr. Brown completed a medical residency at The Roosevelt Hospital and served in the United States Public Health Service. This was followed by an infectious diseases fellowship at MSK. Dr. Brown then joined the faculty of MSK and Weill Cornell Medical College.
At the time of his retirement from MSK in 2018, he had served for 40 years and was Attending Physician, Clinical Member, and Chief and Medical Director of the Employee Health and Wellness Service at MSK, as well as a Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.
An infectious disease specialist at MSK, Dr. Brown diagnosed and treated bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic infections in thousands of patients with cancer and AIDS. He was also involved in the research of new methods to prevent and treat the infectious complications of cancer and the immunocompromised host.
Dr. Brown was a collaborator in the early clinical trials of antiretroviral therapy of HIV infections. In addition to his role as a clinician and clinical investigator, Dr. Brown published and lectured widely and helped train the next generation of infectious disease physicians.
As Chief and Medical Director of the Employee Health and Wellness Service, Dr. Brown was also responsible for the health and safety of all MSK employees and volunteers by making sure that they were compliant with all state and federal regulatory requirements. By meeting these requirements, MSK employees were not only ensuring their own health and safety but also that of MSK’s patients and visitors.
In 2015, Dr. Brown received the honorary title of Master of the American College of Physicians (ACP). He is also a Fellow of both the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America. He served on various committees of both the ACP and IDSA.
Dr. Brown was a founding member and was subsequently elected president of the Infectious Disease Society of New York. He served on the Infections in Patients with Cancer Panel of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. He was also a consultant to the Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
