Dr. Alexis Chidi explains how MSK uses advanced procedures and same-day pathology to diagnose lung cancer quickly.

Here at MSK, the thoracic surgeons do several diagnostic procedures. These include things like endobronchial ultrasound, which is a way for us to identify whether there's cancer in any of the lymph nodes in the chest; and robotic bronchoscopy, which allows us to biopsy lung nodules. Each procedure that we do is usually about one to two hours, and people usually go home the same day. During these diagnostic procedures, we do something called rapid onsite evaluation. That means there's a pathologist that reviews every sample we do, to make sure they have enough information to make a diagnosis.
