Death Over Dinner: Lively Conversations about Dying

What is Death Over Dinner?

Founded as a way to initiate dialogue around one’s priorities and end-of-life preparedness, Death Over Dinner has become an international phenomenon inspiring over 2 million attendees to attend 200,000+ dinners across over 30 countries. Dozens of medical and wellness leaders designed this uplifting event to transform a difficult conversation into an evening of deep engagement, insight and empowerment.

In an attempt to raise awareness about the need for candid dialogue about death and dying, MSK’s Patient & Family Advisory Council for Quailty (PFACQ) brought Death Over Dinner to the MSK community. The inaugural Death Over Dinner, which took place on June 13, 2018, brought together clinicians, administrative staff, hospital leadership, patients and caregivers around the dinner table for candid dialogue about a topic that is too-often taked about in hushed tones or avoided altogether. MSK became the first hospital in the country to invite patients and caregivers to have a seat at the table alongside hospital staff for this important conversation.

All perspectives are welcome and encouraged.

Word of Death Over Dinner has continued to spread within the MSK community as people have spoken about the supportive and welcoming environment in which they have connected with their colleagues in uniquely profound ways. Death Over Dinner events have also been hosted in regional sites, with events taking place in Commack, Nassau, and most recently, Westchester.

As part of the growth and evolution of Death Over Dinner, teams have begun to request their own events so as to strengthen their connections with one another. We have hosted events exclusively for Hospitalists, ICU staff, various RN teams, and the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) care teams.

There have been over 50 Death Over Dinner events, attended by over 1,900 people across the MSK community. All MSK patients and caregivers are strongly encouraged to attend.
