Full Title
Lymph Node Excision (LNEx) for Patients with Stage III Melanoma with One Clinically Positive Node: Excision of Lymph Node Trial [EXCILYNT]Purpose
Researchers want to see if removing only 1 lymph node with cancer prevents melanoma from coming back in that area. The people in this study have melanoma that spread to just 1 lymph node.
The standard approach to melanoma surgery is to:
- Remove the melanoma
- Take out the lymph node with cancer
- Remove additional lymph nodes around the cancerous lymph node
However, removing multiple lymph nodes can cause side effects such as swelling, pain, and decreased mobility. Doctors hope that removing only the cancerous lymph node works as well as removing multiple nodes for preventing melanoma recurrence.
