Residency Curriculum

Our program prides itself on a large, diverse group of mentors with deep expertise across a broad range of subjects. Each rotation typically has a rotation director as well as one or more rotation mentors. Oral and/or written examinations are delivered at the end of most rotations.

Orientation and Professional Curriculum

Regional Clinic Introduction

  • 4 weeks

Radiation Safety

  • 8 Weeks
  • Includes dedicated patient communication training
  • Director: Lawrence Dauer
  • Mentors: Brian Quinn, Bae Chu

Treatment Planning

  • 21 weeks
  • Seven blocks of progressive training, including Beam Properties and MU Calcs, Imaging for Planning, 2D-3D Planning and Contouring, IMRT/VMAT Planning, SRS/SBRT Planning, and Advanced Topics
  • Dedicated physics and planning mentors for each block

Calibration, QA, and Dosimetry Physics

  • 21 weeks
  • Five blocks of training, including Detectors, Treatment Machines, Imaging Devices, TPS Commissioning and QA, and Special Topics
  • Dedicated didactic and practice mentors for each block

Brachytherapy

  • 12 weeks
  • Rotation director: Antonio Damato

Chart Check and Review

  • 6 Weeks

Quality & Safety

  • 2 Weeks
  • Mentors: Jean Moran, Cesar Della Biancia, Katherine Chapman, Megan Hyun

Independent Service (at a regional clinic)

  • 6 weeks
  • Mentors dependent on location of regional rotation

MR-Linac

  • 6 weeks
  • Rotation director: James Mechalakos
  • Rotation mentors: Neelam Tyagi, Paola Godoy Scripes, Nicolas Cote

Proton Therapy

  • 4 weeks
  • Director: Haibo Lin
  • Completed at the NY Proton Center

Clinical Elective

  • 10 weeks
  • Elective time may be used for clinical projects, expansion of other rotations, or other activities approved by the Program Director
  • This block includes time for commissioning activities (typically 4-6 weeks)

Ongoing Clinical Service and Activities

  • 2 years (concurrent with primary rotations)
  • Clinical service including in-vivo dosimetry, patient-specific QA, and machine QA
  • Weekly seminar, weekly clinical case review sessions including journal club and task group presentations
  • Clinical projects and research opportunities
