The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Interventional Radiology (IR) Residency creates a distinct intersection of general IR and cancer care and produces exceptional clinicians and leaders in the field of IR. This is an ACGME accredited residency program for Vascular and Interventional Radiology – a one-year Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) program and a two-year Independent IR Residency.
We instruct in common and extreme interventional oncology, teaching mastery of ablation and embolization, and we lead in new areas, such as lung embolization and liver deprivation with both venous and portal vein embolization. We emphasize care in vascular disease including chronic and acute venous disease, Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS), venous sampling, and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). At a time when many IR residencies have lost their primary involvement in PAD, we diagnose and manage PAD in our cancer patients through our IR run Vascular Lab where IR residents prepare for the Registered Physician Vascular Interpretation exam and our IR run angiosuites. In addition, cutting edge musculoskeletal interventions including spinal embolization, ablation, screw placement, as well as more common bone procedures such as kyphoplasty are part of our practice. High volume complex biliary intervention, antegrade and retrograde lymphangiogram, Denver shunt creation, and routine and complex biopsies, abscess drainages, urologic intervention, venous access, and managing the hemorrhaging patient round trainees’ experience. The IR Service at MSKCC is one of the world’s largest and busiest programs, with over 15,000 interventions performed annually in 11 image-guided operating rooms and more than 5000 outpatient clinic visits per year.
Residents learn skills of patient ownership, compassionate care, and complicated decision making through clinic and floor care of patients. Residents have 2 months of rotation at Cornell Medical for additional learning and consulting opportunities at a top-rated hospital.
MSKCC IR Residency spans two facilities – the Main Hospital and newly built outpatient Koch Center. Our 11 procedural rooms feature state-of-the-art equipment including hybrid fluoroscopic and CT rooms and PET/CT for PET-guided biopsies and ablations.
Residents take part in research with our staff who investigate the span of innovation including bench research, machine learning, and clinical research. Residents have access to our animal laboratory with CT scan, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, and angiography suite capable of large animal research. National and international meeting presentation is encouraged and presentations at meetings are reimbursed.
Our faculty staff has 25 members – great teachers and leaders in their field of expertise. The Resident didactic experience includes a daily morning rounds, weekly teaching collaboration with Columbia and Cornell Universities, weekly faculty led Service didactic meetings with Journal Club, Mortality and Morbidity Conference, and Service Lecture Series, a monthly case conference collaboration with Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute, and a monthly Oncology and Vascular Conference where Residents hone presentation skills. Weekly tumor boards and Case Conference facilitate discussion of complex cases for a consensus.
