Thyroid Nodule Assessment Program

Share

A thyroid nodule is an abnormal growth of thyroid cells that forms a lump within the thyroid gland. Thyroid nodules are very common. Most are noncancerous (benign). A few contain thyroid cancer and may require treatment.

Memorial Sloan Kettering offers a comprehensive Thyroid Nodule Assessment Program for people who want to have a thyroid nodule evaluated closely. Our doctors will determine a personalized care plan for you. Some people may have surgery for thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer, but others won’t need to.

The program is led by a team of experts in surgery, endocrinology, radiology, and pathology. We work together closely, along with advanced practiced nurses, all of whom specialize in evaluating thyroid nodules. Our specialists use state-of-the-art diagnostic and imaging technology to assess the nodules. Then we work with you to find the plan that is best for you. We may recommend active surveillance, a biopsy, or a referral to a doctor for treatment.

The Thyroid Nodule Assessment Program includes experts at MSK’s Manhattan locations as well as at MSK Basking Ridge and MSK Monmouth

A referral from a doctor or a previous medical workup are not necessary for an appointment. The program has a fast-track process to diagnose people quickly, often on the same day as the appointment.

For an appointment, call 800-525-2225, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm ET.

Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy

MSK offers a Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy Clinic for people who already know they need a biopsy. FNA is a simple and safe way to diagnose masses or tumors. It uses a thin needle to take a very small sample of cells that can be examined by a pathologist (a doctor who specializes in diagnosing disease). To schedule a thyroid nodule biopsy, contact MSK’s Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Clinic at 212-639-6318.
