The International Association of Small Cell Lung Cancer Young Investigators (IASCLC-YI) was established to promote scientific and professional development of the next generation of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) researchers. By promoting trainee development, our group hopes to help ensure that continued progress is made against this aggressive, recalcitrant form of lung cancer.

The IASCLC-YI is open to all graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows, and new faculty at academic institutions who are interested in SCLC research. Our membership includes trainees from more than 40 institutions in more than 20 countries across three continents. To ensure true international reach, we are fortunate to partner with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) SCLC Consortium, the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), the European Thoracic Oncology Platform (ETOP), and the European Respiratory Society (ERS).

To facilitate continued trainee development, we organize both virtual and in-person events. In 2024, we have established a monthly virtual meeting where trainees and expert SCLC faculty from around the world can regularly interact.

During these virtual meetings, we host a rotating series of continuing education lectures from field experts, trainee research in progress talks, and non-traditional journal clubs. We have designed a continuing education lecture series to cover foundational topics in SCLC research and clinical management. Each live lecture is recorded and posted in a continuing education lecture repository to serve as a resource for current and future trainees. Research in progress talks provide trainees a valuable platform to present their research and receive feedback from the global SCLC research community. Lastly, our journal clubs provide a mechanism for collectively reviewing new and exciting advances in SCLC research. We have intentionally implemented a panel and invited discussant format for our journal clubs to give trainees a chance to gain experience sitting on panels common at external conferences. These journal clubs also enable trainees to connect with and directly discuss key advances with the authors of each published work.

In addition to our monthly virtual meeting, our group also organizes in-person events at large cancer conferences, such as the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting, the annual World Conference on Lung Cancer meeting, and SCLC Consortium meetings.
