Gastrointestinal Pathology Fellowship

Share

The Department of Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center offers a one-year fellowship training program in gastrointestinal pathology. The fellowship begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th the following year. All fellows should have completed residency training in anatomic pathology and be certified (or eligible for certification) by the American Board of Pathology.

Our gastrointestinal pathology fellow engages daily in the review and discussion of a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal, pancreatic and hepatic pathology, from the quotidian to rarely encountered entities. In caring for our patients, our fellow will encounter both neoplastic and non-neoplastic, inflammatory, and pre-cancerous lesions. Fellows are integrated into a multidisciplinary team of experts in gastrointestinal endoscopy, oncology, surgery, radiology, and hepatology. We provide ample opportunities to engage in independent and collaborative clinicopathologic and translational research.

Our collegial and experienced gastrointestinal pathology team includes leaders in their respective areas of interest and is fully subspecialized in gastrointestinal pathology. In addition, our faculty has expertise in molecular pathology, cytopathology, and proteomics. A wealth of interesting and challenging material is available for study.

The program includes a three-month rotation in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical Center, where the case material includes a substantial amount of non-neoplastic gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology.

Fellows have access to intradepartmental and institutional didactics across the breadth of the disciplines of pathology and oncology.

Applicants should have demonstrated a sustained interest in gastrointestinal disease and evidence of strong oral and written communication skills.

Only complete applications will be reviewed. Once applicants have submitted their applications, they will need to send the following documents:

  • Three letters of recommendation from an institution in which the applicant has trained. Letters should be addressed to Dr. Carlie Sigel, the program director. Please request letter writers add the following line after the heading (RE: Candidate’s Name, Program & Dates for the program)
  • CV
  • Copy of a medical school diploma and translation, if necessary.
  • International medical school graduates must submit a copy of their Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate that is marked “valid indefinitely”

Goals and Objectives

  • To increase experience with gastrointestinal, pancreatic, and hepatic tumors, their precursors, and their mimics
  • To increase experience with the diagnosis of non-neoplastic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver
  • To develop an understanding of special techniques (ie. Immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics) in the pathologic characterization of gastrointestinal diseases
  • To develop an understanding of the clinical features of gastrointestinal, hepatic, and pancreatic diseases, including diagnostic evaluation of patients, treatment algorithms, and tumor-staging parameters and prognostic indices
  • To develop an appreciation of the multidisciplinary team approach to the treatment of patients with these diseases
  • To enhance teaching abilities through the interaction with pathology trainees, students, and clinicians
  • To develop appreciation for research techniques and utilize these techniques to complete research projects with the goal of publication

Clinical Responsibilities

Gastrointestinal pathology fellows review slides and prepare reports for selected in-house and consultation cases, with increasing independence as the fellowship progresses. Cases sent in direct personal consultation to our experienced faculty will be reviewed daily by the fellow with guidance on writing clear, explanatory consult letters. Interdisciplinary conferences are held regularly with various members of the institutions’ gastrointestinal disease management teams, and the fellow will review cases and present them.

Research Activities

Gastrointestinal pathology fellows engage in both independent and collaborative research including data collection, analysis, and compilation of manuscripts for submission to scientific meetings and journals.

Stipend and Maintenance

The stipend is commensurate with the year of the applicant’s postgraduate training. Nearby housing is available with rents that are comparable to NYC market rates; professional liability insurance and health coverage are provided free of charge.

Facilities

Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases is a 425-bed hospital devoted to the care of patients with neoplastic diseases. The hospital is part of the Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center, which also includes Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research. There is an affiliation and close interaction between the clinical and research units of the Center and the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, as well as with The Rockefeller University.
