Get to Know Me

When I was a child, I had multiple surgeries and related complications that led me to require months of inpatient and outpatient care. My emergency room visits introduced me to the world of medicine. The blood pressure cuffs, electrocardiogram, and other monitoring tools that I encountered there were very intriguing to me at the time, and these early experiences in my youth led me to become a doctor.

I am an anesthesiologist on Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine team, and I chose to go into anesthesiology because it is a fascinating field. It requires the provider to have an in-depth knowledge of how the human body operates and how medications, diseases, and surgical procedures can affect the way it normally operates.

Because of the nature of the healthcare system, the anesthesiologist and the patient don’t have a lot of time to interact before the operating room. I understand the uncertainty and feelings of anxiety that a patient and their loved ones may experience the morning of surgery — I experienced it myself. In order to find and implement solutions that work best for the patients, such as pre-anesthesia testing, medical evaluation from specialists, and pain control during and after surgery, my research analyzes the way we provide anesthesia. I am also interested in studying methods to improve communication between the anesthesiologist and the patient to make the limited amount of time we interact more meaningful.

Patients and their families are on a journey to healing. Treating the disease is good, but I believe that recognizing the humanity involved in this process and treating the patient as a whole is much better.
