Get to Know Me
As an intensivist (a doctor with special training in treating people who are very sick) and nephrologist (a doctor with special training in treating kidneys), I see patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Being both an intensivist and a nephrologist allows me to provide special and unique care to people in the ICU. Many of the people who are in the ICU develop some injury to their kidneys. This can include electrolyte and acid-base imbalances, as well as chronic kidney disease or kidney failure. I draw on my expertise as a nephrologist to provide high-quality care to patients in the ICU with many different kinds of kidney injuries.
The patients I see are often worried about what an ICU stay will mean for them. “Will I make it out of the ICU?” and “Will I come off the ventilator?” are among the questions most commonly asked by patients. People in the ICU usually also want to know how their condition will affect their ability to return to their daily routine.
Being in the ICU can be stressful and fraught with questions. I take the time to communicate clearly about what patients and their families can expect, so there is no guesswork. I believe in setting real and honest expectations and hope that this eases some of the concerns that come with staying in the ICU. It is my goal that my patients feel that I have done everything in my power to effectively treat their conditions, from the treatment I give to the information that I provide.
