Get to Know Me

I am a pediatric hematologist-oncologist and physician-scientist on the MSK Kids team who focuses mainly on research related to children’s cancers. I also see pediatric patients who are admitted to Memorial Hospital, the main hospital at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), who come in for urgent care visits.

In my research, I study the various types of pediatric sarcomas and the impact of the immune system on their development. I am exploring components of the immune system that aren’t working properly and how they might influence cancer growth. By identifying these components, we can either design better immunotherapies for these patients or identify those who would benefit most from existing immunotherapies.

Ultimately, my dream is that at the time of diagnosis, every child with cancer would be able to get a full immune profile showing what is going on in the tumor and what the rest of their immune system looks like. This knowledge would help us design more effective immunotherapies, which generally have fewer side effects than chemotherapy.

I chose to become a physician-scientist because I have always wanted to improve the care of patients, and I also enjoy research. Having an MD and PhD allows me to do both. I chose pediatric oncology as a field because I love working with children and enjoy partnering with their families.

When I first meet with a child and their family, I think of them as people first, rather than just the disease. I try to learn about what their lives are like outside the hospital.

I tailor our conversations to the age of the patient and what I feel they can understand. I want to make sure the family knows what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, or why we have a particular concern. It’s important that we all partner together to provide the very best treatment for that child.
