Get to Know Me

I am gastroenterologist and hepatologist who cares for people with a variety of liver diseases, including viral hepatitis B and hepatitis C (HCV), immune-mediated liver diseases, and metabolic liver diseases. I have special expertise in managing these diseases in people with cancer, and in treating liver-related problems from cancer treatments.

As a member of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Hepatopancreatobiliary Disease Management team, I work closely with my colleagues in medical oncology, surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology to combine our expertise and ensure we are providing our patients with comprehensive personalized care. I am also a strong believer in cancer prevention and early detection, and screening colonoscopy is an integral part of my practice.

I have been practicing since 2005, but my interest in and passion for treating liver diseases goes back much further, when I saw a close friend receive life-saving care and realized that I wanted to go into the field. I went to medical school at a time when hepatitis C was a “new disease” without treatment options. Since then, I have actively contributed my research and knowledge to the field and am proud to say that we are now able to cure most people with this disease.

My current research focuses on how new drugs used to treat hepatitis C can be utilized in patients with active malignancy and how eradication of HCV can affect recurrence of primary liver cancer. I am also interested in studying the affects of certain antihormonal therapies on the development of fatty liver disease in women with a history of breast cancer.

When I meet with patients, they are often concerned with how their disease will progress, and if their liver disease will affect their cancer treatment. I reassure them that we will take things one step at time, starting with a clear understanding of their diagnosis and symptoms. At MSK, we have access to the best tools and treatments, combined with an entire team of doctors, nurses, and support staff who are committed to helping each of our patients get better.
