Get to Know Me

I’m a pediatric hematologist-oncologist with the MSK Kids team, dedicated to improving treatment results through both patient care and research. I see patients at Memorial Hospital, the main hospital at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK).

While advances in research have transformed the outcomes for a lot of different pediatric cancers, there are still many that are difficult to cure. This drives my commitment to finding better treatments.

In addition to research, I spend some of my time caring for patients. When I first meet a patient and their family, I take time to explain what to expect from treatment in a way they can understand. I encourage families to ask questions and share their concerns, making sure they feel supported throughout their journey. With children, I often use play to connect – it helps me understand how they’re feeling and coping during care.

I find it so inspiring to see former patients thriving years after completing treatment. Knowing that my research could potentially help children reach that point makes this work deeply gratifying.

I chose pediatric cancer research because I was inspired by the idea that I could devote my career to discovering new treatments and have a chance to impact patients’ futures. In my research, I am exploring how the gut microbiome — the trillions of bacteria and other microorganisms living in the digestive tract — shapes the immune system and affects children’s responses to cancer treatment.

I lead a team dedicated to determining how the microbiome can influence the response to immunotherapy. Our goal is to develop microbiome-based therapies to improve outcomes after cancer treatment, particularly bone marrow (stem cell) transplantation and neuroblastoma therapies. I am also an active member of the Microbiome and Cancer Working Group, which brings together scientists from around the world who are exploring the links between the microbiome and cancer.

My research has been supported and honored through several awards, including the Young Investigator Award by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Hyundai Hope on Wheels, the Career Development Award from the Tow Center for Developmental Oncology, the Reach Award from the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, and more recently, the Damon Runyon–St. Jude Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation Fellowship, among others.
