Get to Know Me

I’m a pediatric hematologist-oncologist and bone marrow transplant specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

I have special training and more than 20 years of experience in using bone marrow transplants to treat conditions such as:

  • Pediatric blood cancers: Leukemia and lymphoma.
  • Inherited blood disorders: Sickle cell disease, thalassemia, and bone marrow failure.
  • Immune and inflammatory system conditions: Severe immune deficiencies, autoimmune disorders, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-related disorders. This includes chronic active EBV and EBV-driven hyperinflammation. I also treat Castleman disease and other hyper-inflammatory conditions such as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).

A bone marrow transplant is lifesaving procedure where unhealthy bone marrow is replaced with healthy stem cells that will make the bone marrow healthy again.

My inspiration for becoming a doctor comes from my family. My mother always encouraged me to pursue medicine, but it was my brother’s battle with leukemia that truly changed my life. Watching him fight that illness inspired me to dedicate my career to treating children with blood cancers and helping families find hope of a cure.

When you meet with me, you can expect open and honest communication. A bone marrow transplant is a big journey, and I spend time helping parents and patients understand every step. This ranges from what to expect during treatment to how life will look years down the road.

While my main goal is always to treat the disease, I also focus on what comes after treatment. My team and I aim work hard to meet these goals:

  • Prevent transplant complications and protect vital organs like the heart, lungs, and liver.
  • Reduce long-term side effects and lower the risk of secondary health issues.
  • Help children return to school, sports, and everyday life so they can grow into healthy, active adults.

My research focuses on making bone marrow transplants safer and more effective. I study ways to prevent organ injury, lower treatment risks, and improve transplant success for rare immune disorders and blood cancers.

I am also deeply passionate about making lifesaving care available to children everywhere. Originally from India, I helped establish the first government-funded pediatric bone marrow transplant center in the state of Madhya Pradesh. This program brings world-class transplant care to children in resource-limited areas, proving that every child deserves a chance at a cure, no matter where they live.
