Get to Know Me

I competed my medical and postgraduate education in Saint Petersburg, Russia, where I served as an Attending Hematologist for five years while working on my PhD thesis in hematology. In contrast to the United States (U.S.), peripheral blood and bone marrow smears in Russia are reviewed by hematologists. There, I became fascinated by the specialty of hematopathology. As a clinician, I was also able to appreciate the importance of its role in the prompt and correct diagnosis of hematologic malignancies.

After defending my PhD thesis, I moved to the US, where I completed my training in pathology and hematopathology. In 2006, I joined the Department of Hematopathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center and worked there as an Attending Hematopathologist for 16 years. I reviewed peripheral blood smears and bone marrow, as well as lymph node and other tissue biopsy specimens with associated flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry studies.

My research focused on acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and B-lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma. I demonstrated the unique features of patients with de novo AML carrying the Philadelphia chromosome, which was subsequently recognized in the 2016 edition of World Health Organization classification. I also demonstrated that patients with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-positive aggressive B-cell lymphoma should be distinguished from patients with de novo B-lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma, which was subsequently recognized in the 2022 edition of World Health Organization classification.

While at MD Anderson, I also dedicated a significant amount of my time and efforts to the education of clinical fellows; for nine years, I directed the largest hematopathology fellowship program in the U.S. In 2023 I was honored to join the faculty of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where I continue my clinical, research, and educational efforts.

What I Do at MSK

I'm a pathologist, which is a doctor who uses a microscope to make a diagnosis from cell and tissue samples. I analyze these samples to learn the cause and effects of a health issue.
