Get to Know Me

I’m a pediatric hematologist-oncologist on the MSK Kids team who specializes in research and cares for young people with rare cancers. I chose this field because there is still so much we don’t know about cancer in children and how or why these tumors develop. I want to work toward a better understanding of these cancers and improve treatment results for my patients.

As a researcher in Chrysothemis Brown’s lab, I’ve been looking to understand how tumors in young children are able to hide from the immune system. I want to examine how a child’s developing immune system reacts to cancer. My goal is to find new ways to help the immune system recognize and destroy cancer cells.

I have a special interest in studying a childhood liver cancer called hepatoblastoma, which often develops in very young children. I want to learn more about the biology of this tumor and how the immune system interacts with it. I was awarded a fellowship from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to support this research.

Besides research, I see patients who are staying in the hospital and also see patients at our clinic for rare pediatric cancers. This includes liver tumors such as hepatoblastoma and hepatocellular carcinoma, kidney tumors such as Wilms’ tumor, germ cell tumors, and rare sarcomas and carcinomas.

A cancer diagnosis in a child can be a scary time for families. Along with others on the MSK Kids care team, I approach you and your child with thoughtfulness and empathy. I meet you where you are at, and make sure you and your child feel informed and empowered to make the best decisions.

I love what I do because I enjoy working with and caring for children with cancer and their families. It’s been exciting to see how the research we do improves treatments and outcomes. I think how the field looks now and how it will look when I retire will be very different. There is so much potential for new discoveries.
