Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) today announced the following awards and appointments:

John Maciejowski Awarded the 2023 Pershing Square Sohn Prize for Young Investigators in Cancer Research

John Maciejowski, PhD, Sloan Kettering Institute molecular biologist and principal investigator of The John Maciejowski Lab, was one of seven recipients of the 2023 Pershing Square Sohn Prize for Young Investigators in Cancer Research. The award is presented annually to cancer research scientists and physician-scientists based in the greater New York City area. The prize empowers early-career investigators and enables them to pursue innovative research projects during a crucial stage when conventional funding may be limited or insufficient.

Simon Powell Honored with Gold Medal by the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology

Simon Powell, MD, PhD, FRCP, Department of Radiation Oncology and Enid A. Haupt Chair in Radiation Oncology, was awarded the Gold Medal Award by the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO). The Gold Media is ASTRO’s highest honor, bestowed upon esteemed members who have made exceptional contributions to radiation oncology, including research, clinical care, teaching, and service.

MSK’s Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program Received First-Ever Accreditation from American Nurses Credentialing Center

The Advance Practice Provider Fellowship Program at MSK received the Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Accreditation TM (APPFP) accreditation designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, becoming the first program ever to achieve this recognition. The APPFP is a newly established credential that recognizes transition-to-practice programs for physician assistants (PAs) and advanced practice registered nurses (ARNP). The attainment of this accreditation signifies MSK’s excellence in effectively facilitating the transition of PAs and APRNs to new settings.

Eileen O’ Reilly, Howard Scher and Deb Schrag Inducted into Giants of Cancer Care Class of 2023

Eileen M. O’Reilly, MD, gastrointestinal oncologist, Winthrop Rockefeller Endowed Chair of Medical Oncology, Howard I. Scher, MD, genitourinary oncologist, head of the Biomarker Development Program, and D. Wayne Calloway Chair in urologic oncology, and Deb Schrag, MD, MPH, gastrointestinal oncologist, Department of Medicine and George J. Bosl Chair at MSK, were elected to the 11th class of Giants of Cancer Care® for their contributions to gastrointestinal cancer care, genitourinary cancer care, and prevention and care delivery respectively. The mission of the Giants of Cancer Care® program is to recognize and celebrate pioneers, innovators, and future generations of leaders who have made remarkable achievements in oncology research and clinical practice.

Adrienne Boire Received the Louise and Allston Boyer Young Investigator Award for Clinical Research

Adrienne Boire, MD, PhD, physician-scientist neuro-oncologist and Geoffrey Beene Junior Faculty Chair, received the Louise and Allston Boyer Young Investigator Award for Clinical Research. This award honors physicians at the assistant or associate level who have demonstrated great promise and accomplishment in clinical investigations.

Martin Weiser Granted the 2023 Willet F. Whitmore Award for Clinical Excellence

Martin R. Weiser, MD, colorectal surgeon, Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs Department of Surgery and Stuart H.Q Quan Chair in Colorectal Surgery, was granted the Willet F. Whitmore Award for Clinical Excellence. This award recognizes a clinician whose talent, dedication, and compassion reflect the standards set by Willet F. Whitmore during his more than 46 years of service at MSK.

Tania Bubb Received Excellence in Health Care Award by United Hospital Fund

Tania Bubb, PhD, RN, CIC, FAPIC, Senior Director, Infection Control, was honored with the United Hospital Fund’s Excellence in Health Care Award. This award honors extraordinary personal leadership to improve quality of care, patient safety, and patient experience. Honorees were selected based on their vision and accomplishments within hospital systems, long-term care facilities, home care organizations and federally qualified health centers from across the greater New York metropolitan region.

Tracy Gosselin and Mercedes Gorre Named Crain’s New York Business 2023 Notable Leaders in Health Care

Tracy Gosselin, PhD, RN, FAAN, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive, and Mercedes Gorre, PhD, Chief of Staff, Office of the President, were named as Notable Leaders in Health Care on Crain’s New York Business 2023 list. The list recognized health care leaders who made a daily impact in the community professionally, philanthropically, and personally. Dr. Gosselin is responsible for leading MSK’s Magnet®-recognized Department of Nursing, which is comprised of over 5,000 highly skilled nurses and nursing support staff across 25 sites of care in New York and New Jersey. Dr. Gorre has over 20 years of scientific research and executive management experience in academia, industry, government, and not-for-profit sectors. Dr. Gorre works closely with the President and CEO and other executive leaders to formulate and drive the execution of MSK’s institutional priorities.

Iris Zhi Honored by North Fork Breast Health Coalition 

Iris Zhi, MD, PhD, breast oncologist and Commack Regional Care Network Site Director, was recognized as a 2023 honoree by the North Fork Breast Health Coalition. The coalition is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting the prevention, early intervention, and cure of breast cancer through advocacy, awareness, networking, and research. Dr. Zhi was honored for her contributions to metastatic breast cancer.

Sylvia Corbin, Lisa Yeung and Lisa Lieberman Received 2023 Women of Distinction Award by Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright

Sylvia Corbin, Director, Financial Assistance, Patient Financial Services, Lisa Young, Director, Food and Nutrition Services, and Lisa Lieberman, Senior Director of Hospital Administration, were honored with the 2023 Women of Distinction Award. In honor of Women’s History Month, Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright presented recognition to extraordinary women who are making our communities stronger.

Jerelyn Osoria Julien, RN, BSN, OCN, was one of 20 nurses honored with the Excellence in Nursing Award by Hudson Valley Magazine. The award recognizes local nurses who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and have been nominated by their supervisors and chosen by a panel of selected judges.

MSK Media Relations Team was honored with Communicators of the Year Award by Ragan and PR Daily. This award acknowledges the outstanding achievements of individual communications practitioners and teams in the industry who demonstrated exceptional dedication and achieved remarkable success for their organizations and client throughout the previous year.

MSK Named One of America’s Best Employers for New Grads by Forbes

Forbes named MSK one of America’s Best Employers for New GradsForbes collaborated with Statista to create a list of companies that provide outstanding workplace opportunities for young professionals. The annual list was based on a survey of approximately 28,000 young and early career professionals working for companies with at least 1,000 employees in the United States. Participants were asked to rate their employer in areas such as reputation, salary and benefits, and education and career development.

MSK Named One of America’s Best Employers for Diversity by Forbes

MSK was recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best Employers for Diversity of 2023. Forbes collaborated with Statista to compile their annual list, which was based on a survey of approximately 45,000 employees at American companies and institutions with at 1,000 or more employees. The evaluation process included direct and indirect recommendations from respondents who assessed their organizations in terms of, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, LGBTQ+ equality, and overall diversity.

MSK Named One of America’s Most Innovative Companies by Fortune

MSK was named one of America’s Most Innovative Companies of 2023 by Fortune. Fortune partnered with Statista to create a list of the most innovative companies in America. The list recognized 300 companies that have transformed industries from the inside out. Selection was based on three innovation dimensions: product innovation, process innovation, and innovation culture.

Jae Park Appointed Chief of the Cellular Therapy Service

Jae Park, MD, leukemia specialist and cellular therapist, was appointed Chief of the Cellular Therapy Service at MSK. Dr. Park, who previously served as interim Chief, played a crucial role in developing the service into the central clinical program for all immune effector cell therapies.

Alan Ashworth from University of California, San Francisco Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center Honored at 2023 MSK Convocation and Commencement Ceremony

Alan Ashworth, PhD, FRS, President of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Sr. Vice President for Cancer Services with UCSF Health, was awarded the C. Chester Stock Award Lectureship. This award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of cancer therapy.

Stuart Orkin Awarded The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Prize

Stuart Orkin, MD, pediatric hematologist, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, was honored with The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Prize. The award acknowledges individuals who have made significant or groundbreaking contributions to pediatric oncology, highlighting the long-standing and future-facing partnerships between The Society and MSK and affirming the global leadership of MSK in the field of pediatric oncology.
