According to a new study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, saw palmetto extract did not improve symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The study involved 225 men with BPH who were given either 160 mg twice a day of saw palmetto extract or placebo for one year. Researchers found no significant difference in the American Urological Association Symptom Index (AUASI) scores or the maximal urinary flow rate between the two groups.
