Karen L. Connolly, MD
Dermatologist & Mohs Surgeon
My Role at MSKWe post reviews for MSK healthcare providers who have at least 30 patient experience surveys completed. If you do not see reviews for a provider, it may be because they do not yet have enough survey responses, or the provider may not be part of the group of healthcare providers included in the survey.
Only outpatient providers are included in the survey. Healthcare providers who only work in the hospital or in urgent care are not included in the survey. Pathologists or researchers who do not provide direct care to patients do not have reviews.

I completed my fellowship training in Mohs micrographic surgery at MSK. Mohs micrographic surgery is a precision technique that we use to surgically remove skin cancer. It is usually reserved for areas on the head and neck, or on other parts of the body where this delicate approach is appropriate. This surgical technique removes the cancerous tissue as carefully as possible, sparing other areas unaffected by skin cancer. Mohs surgery is also used for certain aggressive skin cancers; the higher cure rate associated with Mohs surgery can improve outcomes among patients with these types of skin cancer.
A skin cancer diagnosis can affect a patient’s quality of life in many ways. My mission is to help patients undergo treatment and return to their daily lives with as little disruption as possible. After I remove a patient’s skin cancer, I perform wound reconstruction, using specialized techniques to minimize scarring. I also take the time to discuss how to best manage the wound with my patients. Although removing the cancerous tissue is always my first priority, I am equally invested in ensuring that my patients are satisfied with how the area will look after surgery.
My clinical and research interests include the treatment of early-stage melanoma of the head and neck, also called lentigo maligna or lentigo maligna melanoma, and I have authored numerous articles and book chapters on this type of cancer. When treating these cancers, I use a staged excision technique (known as slow Mohs); this allows me to precisely map out the extent of the disease. Slow Mohs is a tissue-sparing approach that offers a very high cure rate for this patient population. This is important, given that the head and neck is a sensitive area and preserving as much normal tissue possible is a top priority.
I also study skin cancer management in the aging population and squamous cell carcinoma. My other dermatologic surgery interests include laser- and light-based treatment modalities. In addition, I give talks on skin cancer diagnosis and treatment at the local and national level.
Outside of work, my favorite activities include spending time with my family, reading, and horseback riding.
