I am a pathologist who is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and in cytopathology. My area of expertise is the surgical pathology of soft-tissue and bone tumors. As part of the multidisciplinary teams involved in the management of these tumors, I work closely with colleagues from surgical oncology, orthopaedic oncology, adult and pediatric medical oncology, radiology and radiation therapy. My role as a pathologist mainly involves establishing accurate diagnoses and, as a result, guiding treatment decisions. Working in a large cancer center also gives me an opportunity to be in the forefront in incorporating the latest molecular testing assays in the work-up of these complicated tumors.
My expertise also includes cytopathology — the science of evaluating individual cells to make a diagnosis. The cells are obtained through a minimally invasive procedure called fine-needle aspiration biopsy. As part of the cytopathology team, I perform fine-needle aspirations of superficial palpable lesions and am also trained to perform biopsies of deep-seated lesions under imaging guidance.
My research interest is in the study of soft tissue sarcomas, especially the genetically complex sarcomas such as leiomyosarcoma, myxofibrosarcoma, and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. Along with my colleagues here at Memorial Sloan Kettering, I am involved in understanding the molecular and genetic mechanisms of these tumors, which have a relatively poor prognosis. The goal of this research is to identify markers that may help in diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic decisions.
I am fluent in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Kannada.
