Clinical Nurse II
Brandon Joachim

I am a Clinical Nurse II, who works primarily with people who have gynecologic cancer or who need plastic and reconstructive surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). Being a nurse is rewarding, and I am grateful for being able to help others feel better. I provide care that is focused on the individual and make it a priority to make them feel like themselves, rather than a list of medical conditions, during a difficult time in their lives. My passion for connecting with people from diverse walks of life, along with my natural gravitation towards aiding others, led me to this position. While there are many reasons I became a nurse, an instance that has cemented my ambitious nursing spirit was when a patient on her 8th day in the hospital, told me that my day with her was the first day she’s laughed during her whole stay here. It’s those little things I can provide that have a monumental impact on myself as well as my patient care.

My diverse background in theater and the arts helps me connect authentically and effectively with people from all walks of life. It also helps me build trust. My theater experience has given me the skills of being able to take an audience out of what may be a tough reality and make them focus on the present moment. I bring a warm, positive, and engaging attitude to everything I do.

At MSK, I am a Bioethics Ambassador. In this role, I help patients, caregivers, and staff members navigate ethical challenges that may arise during delivery of care. I raise awareness and understanding of medical and clinical ethics so we can provide the best care for our patients. Common examples of ethical challenges I face center around with decisions in withholding/withdrawing medications in end-of-life care as well as helping navigate family dynamics and decision-making through challenging and uncertain circumstances.

As a simulation lab instructor, I train nursing students in building clinical skills and developing critical thinking in different patient care situations. It is rewarding to help lead and train the next generation of nurses and help pay it forward. I am also team leader for Nursing News, MSK’s newsletter for the Department of Nursing, where we aim to keep our nurses informed and engaged with the latest updates and events. In each of my diverse roles and initiatives, I try to bring positive energy and creative thinking so that I can truly make a difference.
