General Housing

A decision will be communicated to you within the time periods described on this site and within the eligibility criteria. You may reach out to the MSK Housing Office if you have questions during this time, but please note we will not be able to provide more specific timing on when in that window you will receive a decision.

Eligible family members are defined as the employee, the employee’s spouse/domestic partner, and children.

No, parents and grandparents are not included in family size calculations.

No, we cannot accommodate requests for specific units or buildings.

You may request a tour within your acceptance period, and we will accommodate these requests if the unit is unoccupied. Building information and media will be provided when available.

Your desired move-in date can be up to 14 days before your MSK start date, availability permitting.

No, if you decline an MSK housing offer you are not eligible to reapply.

No, if you’ve used or are currently using MSK’s mortgage assistance program, you are not eligible to apply for MSK housing.

Offer Acceptance

Once your move-in date is confirmed, the Housing Office will issue a license agreement for your review and signature. This agreement is a condition of your employment at MSK. Please review it carefully and contact the Housing Office with any questions.

A security deposit is only collected at Sutton Terrace, a non-trainee property.

First Month: All new residents are required to pay their first month’s rent—or a prorated amount—via ClickPay. A link and instructions for setting up your ClickPay account will be provided by the Housing Office. ClickPay does not charge a fee for ACH payments, but a 2.97% fee applies when paying by credit card.

Thereafter: Rent is automatically deducted through payroll, with the exception of positions funded by external sources.

While not required, MSK strongly recommends that residents obtain renter’s insurance. It is typically inexpensive and offers valuable protection and peace of mind in the event of damage to personal belongings. Renter’s insurance can be purchased through any major insurance provider or broker.

The Housing Office will inform you of the earliest possible occupancy date for your assigned unit. Based on this date, you will be asked to confirm your preferred move-in date. The Housing Office will assist in coordinating an elevator reservation with the building superintendent or condominium management, as applicable.

If you are using a moving company, you must provide a copy of the company’s Certificate of Insurance (COI) to the Housing Office.

Move Out

We request a minimum of two weeks notice prior to vacating your apartment.

You must notify MSK Housing of your intent to vacate via email. Your notice must include the following details:

  • Vacate date
  • Personal e-mail and phone number
  • Desired elevator reservation time
  • COI for your moving company (if using movers) 

Your building’s superintendent will contact you to schedule a move out inspection if necessary.

To avoid cleaning or damage charges, leave your apartment in broom swept condition and remove all furniture and personal items. If you painted any walls, they must be primed back to white.

Yes, you are required to have an elevator reservation for move-out. The only exception is if your apartment is on the first floor. You must coordinate with MSK Housing and your superintendent to reserve the elevator.

Return your keys to the door staff or superintendent. Contact USPS to forward your mail. Terminate all ConEdison, telephone, internet, and cable services.

Faculty

No, due to high demand and limited inventory, we do not guarantee housing for all eligible applicants.

Your desired move-in date can be up to 14 days prior to your MSK start date, and up to 60 days after your MSK start date. Please note that we cannot guarantee your unit will be ready 14 days prior; this is the earliest possible date and is subject to availability.

When completing an application, you will have the opportunity to indicate your preferred unit size and maximum monthly rent. We do our best to accommodate these preferences when assigning an apartment.

If you submitted your application at least 90 days before your desired move in date, you will receive a decision 60 days before your desired move in.

Yes, you may reapply so long as you are within your first (2) years of employment.

You have 30 days to accept or decline. If the offer is not accepted within this period, it will expire, and you will not be eligible to apply for MSK housing in the future.

At this time, there are no term limits on the length of stay in MSK faculty housing – you may stay in your unit so long as you are an active, eligible employee with MSK. This policy is subject to change. If you change positions or departments, you must notify the MSK Housing Office immediately, as this may impact your housing eligibility.

You must take occupancy of your assigned unit within 60 days of the requested occupancy date stated on your application.

No, lateral transfers are not permitted. If you’ve experienced a life event that’s changed your family size, you can apply for an upgrade or downgrade.

Professionals

The professionals application opens for the first seven days of each month only if there are apartments available. If you visit the application during the first week of the month and find that it is closed, please try again the following month.

Yes, you may reapply so long as you are within your first (2) years of employment and have not previously declined an MSK housing offer.

You have 30 days to accept or decline. If the offer is not accepted within this period, it will expire, and you will not be eligible to apply for MSK housing in the future.

At this time, there are no term limits on the length of stay in MSK professionals housing – you may stay in your unit so long as you are an active, eligible employee with MSK. Late applications will be reviewed, and a decision communicated, within 30 days of MSK receiving your application, regardless of your desired move-in date. For example, if you apply for housing on May 7th with a desired move-in date of June 1st, you are not guaranteed a response until June 7th.

Clinical trainees are eligible to remain in trainee housing for the duration of their program. Clinical trainees transitioning into a faculty role must vacate their trainee unit at the conclusion of their program, regardless of the status of their faculty housing application.

Yes, you may reapply so long as you are within your first two years of employment and have waited at least 12 months from your previous application submission.

You must inform the MSK Housing Office by e-mail by February of the year your current program ends. Retention of housing in your new program, lab, or role is subject to approval and is not guaranteed.

Postdocs

Your desired move-in date can be up to 14 days prior to your MSK start date, and up to 30 days after your MSK start date. Please note that we cannot guarantee your unit will be ready 14 days prior; this is the earliest possible date and is subject to availability.

Housing approvals for Research Scholars and Research Associates are subject to availability. Housing approvals for Research Fellows are subject to availability and are not guaranteed.

Students

All new GSK and WCGS students will be offered a room in shared accommodation. Housing approvals for GRAs are subject to availability and are not guaranteed.

We require housing applications to be submitted 60 days prior to your desired move-in date. Late applications will be reviewed, and a decision communicated, within 30 days of MSK receiving your application, regardless of your desired move-in date.

All new students will only be offered a room in shared accommodation. Once you have been in your program for at least one year, and have at least one year remaining, you may apply for an upgrade during one of the two annual windows.

January 1 – January 31 and September 1 – September 30.

You will have an opportunity to list a preferred roommate when applying for housing. While we do our best to accommodate these preferences, roommate selections are not guaranteed.

Yes, shared apartments in MSK Housing are furnished with an XL full mattress, desk lamp, floor lamp, office chair, desk, and chest or drawers.

MSK does not remove or store furniture. You may remove and store the furniture at your own expense, but you must return the original furniture to the unit upon vacating.
