Damon R. Reed, MD
Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist
My Role at MSKWe post reviews for MSK healthcare providers who have at least 30 patient experience surveys completed. If you do not see reviews for a provider, it may be because they do not yet have enough survey responses, or the provider may not be part of the group of healthcare providers included in the survey.
Only outpatient providers are included in the survey. Healthcare providers who only work in the hospital or in urgent care are not included in the survey. Pathologists or researchers who do not provide direct care to patients do not have reviews.
About Me
- Division Head, Pediatric Solid Tumors
- Chief, Pediatric Sarcoma Service
I am a pediatric hematologist-oncologist on the MSK Kids team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I specialize in the care of children, adolescents, and young adults with sarcomas and other solid tumors. I have particular expertise and interest in studying the changes that happen in tumors to make them resistant to therapies.
Cancer is complex and changes over time. My colleagues and I want to gain a better understanding of why this happens so we can predict how cancers may grow and design better therapies to address resistance and reduce cancer relapse. We’d like to restore the sensitivity of tumors to anti-cancer medications and help young people with cancer to live longer, better lives.

In my research, I am exploring how to best combine and sequence therapies to maximize patient outcomes. This includes targeted therapies that take aim at the molecular changes fueling cancer growth, as well as conventional chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and the timely incorporation of surgery and radiation therapy. This is a revolutionary field in cancer called precision oncology. I am also involved in early-phase clinical trials, which assess new therapies in people with cancer.
When I meet with a young patient and their family members, I first teach them what I know about cancer. I describe a range of options, listen to them, and answer all of their questions. I then provide a recommendation about their care based on the risks and potential benefits for the patient and family. In addition to caring for patients and doing research, I am the Vice Chair of the Bone Tumor Committee for the Children’s Oncology Group. I am also the Vice President of the Connective Tissue Oncology Society, an international society of sarcoma specialists, and will be the group’s President in 2024. I chose this field to make a difference for the extraordinary and inspiring young people I care for, who want and deserve better therapies. I think we are on the cusp of improving outcomes for them and their families. I am excited to be a part of the world-class team at MSK Kids and will collaborate with others across the institution to develop more dynamic approaches to the care of young people with sarcomas and other pediatric solid tumors.
