Rachel Matarazzo Rassam

I’m an adult nurse practitioner at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with more than 15 years of experience in cancer care. I have special training in the care of people with gastrointestinal and appendiceal cancers.

I currently run an independent advanced practice clinic focused on appendiceal conditions. I focus on low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN), a rare tumor of the appendix. I also focus on peritoneal surface malignancies which are related to LAMN. These are rare, complex cancers that start in or spread to the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdominal cavity.

I provide complete evaluation, long-term care, and help coordinate care for patients across all stages of disease. I work closely with a team of many different experts. This includes surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists to make sure that each person receives a care plan that fits their specific needs.

When I meet with you, I will review your diagnosis and come up with a plan for long-term follow up and surveillance for appendiceal neoplasms. This means we will actively watch or monitor your symptoms. I also help you manage peritoneal disease.

I understand that being diagnosed with a rare condition can be overwhelming and confusing. I help explain your diagnosis, test results, and treatment options in a clear and supportive way. We will work together to make decisions, navigate treatment, and to plan long-term care. I am committed to helping you understand changing guidance based on the latest research for these rare conditions.

Besides clinical care, I attend multidisciplinary tumor boards. These are ongoing meetings with a team of cancer care experts where we discuss each patient’s diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

I am also part of research for gastrointestinal and appendiceal cancers. I make sure that I am up to date with the latest research and changing guidance or treatment strategies in the field.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends and staying active. It is a privilege to care for people with rare appendiceal conditions. I am committed to providing thoughtful and highly focused care throughout their treatment journey.
