How MSK Uses AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a type of computer technology. It can find patterns, make predictions, and pull together information quickly.

At MSK, we are always looking for better ways to care for people with cancer. AI is one of the tools that helps us do this. We use AI when it helps us care for you or keeps MSK running well. AI can support your care team as they plan and provide your care. It also helps with daily tasks like scheduling and billing.

You and your care team make all choices about your care. AI does not make these decisions or replace your care team’s judgment. Your safety comes first. We carefully choose the AI tools we use and check that they work as expected.

If you have questions about how AI is used at MSK, see Frequently Asked Questions below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my care team still in charge?
Yes, always. You and your care team make every decision about your care. AI is a tool that helps your care team. It does not make choices about your care or take their place.

What is AI doing in my care?
We use AI to help your care team in certain ways. It can help them spot patterns in your health information and support a diagnosis. It can also help with daily tasks like scheduling visits and billing. We choose where to use it.

Is my health information safe?
Yes. By law, we must keep your health information private and secure. The same rules cover how we use AI. Sometimes we work with outside companies whose tools help us care for you. They must sign a contract that requires them to protect information that can identify you in the same way we do. We do not let outside companies use data that can identify you to train their own AI tools. To learn more, see our Notice of Privacy Practices.

Can I say no?
The AI that supports your care and our daily work is part of our everyday tools. There is nothing for you to turn on or off.

Some tools are different. If your care team wants to use a tool that securely listens to and records  your visit to help your care team write notes, they will ask if it’s OK first.

What if AI gets something wrong?
We check the AI tools we use before we rely on them. When AI helps with your care, a member of your care team reviews its work before acting on it. AI can be wrong. That is why you and your care team, not a computer, always make the decisions about your care.
