Luis Alberto Diaz, Jr. Appointed to the National Cancer Advisory Board by President Biden
Luis Alberto Diaz, Jr., MD, Head of the Division of Solid Tumor Oncology, was appointed to the National Cancer Advisory Board by President Biden.
The National Cancer Advisory Board plays an important role in guiding the Director of the National Cancer Institute in setting the course for the national cancer research program. The National Cancer Advisory Board will complement the Administration’s efforts to build on the spirit and learnings of the Cancer Moonshot, which President Biden led in the Obama-Biden Administration.
Dana Pe’er Named Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator
Dana Pe’er, PhD, Computational Biologist and Lab Head at Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI), is one of 33 biomedical researchers named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator.
The HHMI is a nonprofit medical research organization and one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the US. Committed to progressing basic biomedical research and science education, its scientists have made important discoveries that advance our fundamental understanding of biology.
Justin Perry Honored with Distinguished NIH Director’s New Innovator Award
Justin Perry, PhD, Cell Biologist and Immunologist of Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI), has been named one of 64 recipients of the prestigious 2021 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director’s New Innovator Award.
This Award is a part of the High-Risk, High-Reward Research program, which supports highly innovative research from early stage investigators whose creativity and research have the potential to produce a major impact on broad, important problems relevant to the mission of NIH, including on topics related to behavioral, social, biomedical, applied, and formal sciences, as well as basic, translational, or clinical research.
Direna Alonso-Curbelo Named 2021 Blavatnik Regional Award for Young Scientists Winner
Direna Alonso-Curbelo, PhD, Postdoctoral Researcher of Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI), has been named a winner of the 2021 Blavatnik Regional Awards for Young Scientists in the “Life Sciences” category.
The Blavatnik Regional Awards recognize researchers in three scientific categories: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering, and Chemistry, and honors outstanding postdoctoral scientists from academic research institutions across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Several MSK Researchers Receive National Institutes of Health (NIH) Impact of Genomic Variation on Function (IGVF) Consortium Awards
Danwei Huangfu, PhD, Researcher, Developmental Biology Program, Anna-Katerina Hadjantonakis, PhD, Chair, Developmental Biology Program, Alexander Rudensky, PhD, Chair, Immunology Program, Director, Ludwig Center, and Christina Leslie, PhD, Member, Computational & Systems Biology Program, receive National Institutes of Health (NIH) Impact of Genomic Variation on Function (IGVF) Consortium Awards.
The IGVF Consortium is a new initiative of NIH’s National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) to develop a framework for systematically understanding the effects of genomic variation on genome function and how these effects shape phenotypes. It will bring investigators together in a highly collaborative effort to examine how genomes function, how genome function shapes phenotypes, and how these processes are influenced by genomic variation.
James Harding Receives Westchester and Fairfield County Doctors of Distinction Award
James J. Harding, MD, Medical Oncologist, received the Westchester and Fairfield County Doctors of Distinction Award in the “Cutting Edge” category presented by the Westchester and Fairfield County Business Journal.

Richard O’Reilly, MD, Claire L. Tow Chair in Pediatric Oncology Research, was named to OncLive’s 2021 Class of Giants of Cancer Care in the “Pediatric Oncology” category.
Giants of Cancer Care celebrates the achievements of leading researchers and educators whose discoveries have helped propel the field of oncology and established the building blocks for future advances. Out of hundreds of nominations, only 14 oncologists were selected to join the prestigious 2021 class.

Li, MD, PhD, MPH, Physician Ambassador to China and Asia-Pacific; Co-Director, Thoracic Liquid Biopsy Program; Chief Scientific Officer, MSK Direct, and Erica Fischer-Cartlidge DNP, CNS, CBCN, AOCNS, EBP-C, Interim Nursing Director, Evidence-Based Practice, are recipients of the 40 Under 40 in Cancer Award, sponsored by The Lynx Group, Upstream Partners, the Association for Value-Based Cancer Care, NCODA, and Swim Across America. 40 Under 40 in Cancer is an awards initiative to identify and recognize the contributions being made across the field of cancer by rising stars and emerging leaders under the age of 40 years.
Kevin P. Browne Honored with 2021 Firefighter Thomas Phelan Memorial Award
Kevin P. Browne, DNP, RN, CNS, CCRN, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Ambulatory Care, was named the recipient of the 2021 Firefighter Thomas Phelan Memorial Award by the Irish American Building Society (IABS).
The award which recognizes courageous leadership during difficult times and commitment to others in need, was presented to Dr. Browne at the 2021 Great Irish Fair. The Great Irish Fair of New York honors the work done by members of the Irish American community in New York and highlights those who have gone above and beyond.

This Award celebrates nurses who take the time and care to mentor others.
MSK Inaugurates The Edward P. Evans Center for Myelodysplastic Syndromes
MSK acknowledges the commitment of the Edward P. Evans Foundation to inaugurate The Edward P. Evans Center for Myelodysplastic Syndromes at MSK. With the grant of $5 million matched by institutional funds, MSK will establish the Edward P. Evans Endowed Chair for MDS, Edward P. Evans Seminar in MDS, Edward P. Evans Fellowship Program, and the Edward P. Evans Center for Mechanism-based Therapeutics for MDS—a collaborative research project under the leadership of Omar Abdel-Wahab, MD, who will also serve as the Center Director and the first incumbent of the Edward P. Evans Endowed Chair for MDS.
The Edward P. Evans Center for Myelodysplastic Syndromes at MSK will encourage, promote, and guide research into the causes, therapies, and cures for MDS. The Center will promote collaborations among faculty, students, and others to advance the field of MDS research through sharing knowledge, resources, and best practices.

Anupam Kathpalia, Investment Manager, was named an Institutional Investor’s 2021 Rising Star.
Mr. Kathpalia was one of 12 allocators from across the U.S. in both public and private institutions who are expected to be the next crop of leaders for pensions, endowments, foundations, health care funds, corporate plans, and family offices. The Institutional Investor editorial team selected the Rising Stars from a pool of talented allocators nominated by their peers and supervisors.
MSK Receives Healthcare Leaders of New York (HLNY) 2021 Diversity Leader Award
MSK received the Healthcare Leaders of New York (HLNY) 2021 Diversity Leader Award. HLNY awards leaders who have proven a commitment to eliminate healthcare disparities and increase diversity in governance and leadership.
MSK was recognized for its efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion through the formation of MSK’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion governance group and council, providing resources to targeted populations to improve access to healthcare, and offering ongoing cultural competency workshops to all employees. During the COVID-19 pandemic, MSK established and developed continual collaboration with community partners to support vaccination efforts, including staffing vaccination clinics in Harlem and Nassau County.

The Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for Evidence-based Practice (EBP) in Nursing and Healthcare at The Ohio State University College of Nursing recognized MSK with its first-ever designation for outstanding EBP processes and healthcare outcomes.
MSK received the Excellence in Evidence-based Practice and Outcomes in Healthcare designation at the Gold level due to meeting or exceeding 90 percent of the established criteria in four areas: organizational profile, organizational leadership, infrastructures and processes and patient outcomes.
Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program at MSK Awarded Accreditation with Distinction
The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation in Practice Transition Programs has awarded the Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program at MSK Accreditation with Distinction. This is the highest recognition awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Accreditation Program. The accreditation period is through October 2025.
MSK Receives Hyundai Hope On Wheels 2021 Grant Awards
MSK was awarded the Hyundai Hope On Wheels Hyundai Scholar Hope Grant and the Hyundai Young Investigator Grant, focused on improving outcomes for children battling cancer.
Hyundai Hope On Wheels, a nonprofit organization supported by Hyundai Motor America, provides grants to eligible institutions nationwide that are pursuing critical research aimed at improving treatments and saving lives. Hyundai Hope On Wheels is one of the largest non-profit funders of pediatric cancer research in the country.

The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) recognized MSK in their 2021 Most Wired Hospitals List. CHIME’s Most Wired list acknowledges healthcare organizations that have adopted and deployed information technology to improve patient safety and health outcomes across the industry.
