The NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH) and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) jointly offer an ACGME-accredited two-year Medical Genetics Residency training program. The program is designed to train physicians in the comprehensive diagnosis, management, treatment, risk assessment and counseling of patients who have or are at risk for having genetic disorders or disorders with a genetic component. Both NYPH and MSK are affiliated with the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University. The Division of Medical Genetics at NYPH provides adult, pediatric, and prenatal consultations for a full range of inherited disorders and chromosomal abnormalities. MSK is a comprehensive cancer center consisting of Memorial Hospital and the Sloan Kettering Institute. The Clinical Genetics Service at MSK sees a high volume of patients who have or may have an inherited predisposition to cancer.
This joint training program includes rotations at general genetics clinic, cancer predisposition clinic, craniofacial clinic, neurogenetics clinic, prenatal diagnosis clinic, preimplantation genetic diagnosis clinic, and at biochemical genetics clinics in 2 partner institutions. Laboratory rotations include cytogenetics, biochemical genetics and molecular genetics. At NYPH, research interests relevant to Medical Genetics include syndrome recognition and clinical delineation, neurogenetics, and cancer predisposition. At MSK, research relevant to Medical Genetics is active in four major areas: oncogenesis, genetic susceptibility to cancer, animal modes of human cancer, and gene transfer for gene therapy.
