Music Therapy for the Cancer Patient is a continuing education course ideal for any music therapist beginning a career in an in-patient hospital environment, and for professionals interested in a career change. The program is accredited by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). Upon successful completion of the course, participants will earn 19 Continuing Music Therapy Education (CMTE) credits. Memorial Sloan Kettering is an Approved Provider – Two Year Provisional of the CBMT, holding provider number P-136.
Participants first complete ten hours of instruction led by MSK senior faculty in the specifics of various cancer diagnoses, including leukemia, lymphoma, and breast, prostate, and lung cancers. The second half of the course addresses precise considerations and best practices to successfully establish therapeutic relationships with patients and/or caregivers, perform clinical assessments, and provide interactive and receptive musical interventions.
Participants in this course will meet the following objectives through mastery of the course material. They will learn to:
- Perform clinical assessments of cancer patients.
- Identify appropriate therapeutic interventions based on each patient’s diagnosis, clinical status, age, sex, and ethnicity.
- Demonstrate elements of music in music therapy practice as appropriate for each adult and pediatric patient.
- Interpret clinical assessment results and communicate recommendations for continued music therapy interventions to the medical team.
